Q&A: How do I know which Pilates workout is right for me?

Question by Lubsy: How do I know which Pilates workout is right for me?
I’m looking for a Pilates workout video, but there are SO many options! How do I know what’s right for me? Here are my details:

- 5’7″ female, 180 lbs
- Want to tone and strengthen, but also lose weight
- Definite Pilates beginner, but I want advanced options too
- Don’t own any Pilates equipment; willing to purchase hand weights but not a mat at this time

I’m looking for a DVD with different expertise levels, as well as fat-burning options. I appreciate any suggestions!

i dont know which one is right for you but here is some additional advice: pilates doesnt really burn that much fat. try adding in a cardio routine and slowly reducing calories and fatty foods. you will need protein though since pilates is so muscle and strength intensive. you’ll start to see some better gains with an interdisciplinary routine like that. good luck ! =)

Does anyone know of a good pilates work out?

Question by S: Does anyone know of a good pilates work out?
I’m a ballet student and am needing to incorporate an ab workout into my routine. I’m looking for a short (about a half an hour) workout that’s effective, maybe at an intermediate or advanced level. I’ve already developed my abdominal muscles to some extent, but I’ve heard that pilates can really “shock them into shape” and that pilates is good for dancers. Any suggestions?

Pilates won’t “shock them into shape” – that’s a common misconception. And it certainly won’t give you a six-pack,because it works on the deep core muscles.

The other point about Pilates exercises is that if you don’t do them exactly right, they do no good at all.

I’d recommend you book one private lesson with a Pilates instructor. As a dancer, you’ll pick up the correct form and you’ll then be able to practice on your own.

How long does it take for pilates to burn belly fat and to get a flat stomach?

Question by :) : How long does it take for pilates to burn belly fat and to get a flat stomach?
I wanna get flat abs as soon as possible and i have been told pilates works best. How long does it take to get flat stomach using pilates?

Best answer:

Answer by jibs00
depends on many things.

If you’re burning more than you consume, you’ll lose the flab. The harder you work out, the faster the flab goes away. Try and add running, swimming or another cardio sport to the pilates work out.. good for the heart and lungs, builds endurance and builds a lean body.

Note: If you don’t eat enough calories, you’ll break down muscle and not gain the strength pilates is designed to give you and just become a skin a bones anorexic.

Does anyone know of a good pilates place in the Arden-Arcade area that offers personal pilates instruction?

Question by elis: Does anyone know of a good pilates place in the Arden-Arcade area that offers personal pilates instruction?
I want to find a nice studio that offers one-on-one Pilates training. I don’t like to be in crowded gyms that end up being meat markets. I also want an instructor that is certified. I live in Sacramento, CA.

Thanks!

There’s a really good studio over by Peet’s coffee in the Lyon Village. It’s called Purely Pilates and it’s run by a girl by the name of Kelly. Very clean and she offers one-on-one lessons if you want that.

What is a better workout an elliptical or pilates?

Question by seriously obsessive freak: What is a better workout an elliptical or pilates?
I want a workout that burns fat and was wondering what’s better. Doing an interval workout on the elliptical which is a preprogrammed setting that lasts a half hour or the mtv pilates dvd. What’s a more effective workout? Thanks!

I do both the elliptical and Pilates, so I feel comfortable answering your question. The elliptical is the best machine for burning calories of any kind (better than the treadmill, stationary bike, or stair climber). That’s because it burns more calories per minute (no matter what shape you’re in). Try a few different setting on the elliptical and see which one you like—or switch off from time to time. Kilimanjaro, on the one I use, is a good one.

Pilates is a much different form of exercise. It focuses on flexibility, balance, core strength, and posture. It DOES burn calories, but that isn’t its primary emphasis. It’s quite possible your gym, if you’re a member, has a Pilates class—sometimes it helps to do Pilates in a group. Pilates also has a mind/body/spirit benefit that is very difficult to describe but is quite noticeable once you get into it.

Think of fitness as a triangle. The 3 sides are cardiovascular endurance, resistance training, and flexibility. So…doing the elliptical and Pilates is 2/3′s. Do some resistance training, e.g., weight lifting, and you’ve got it all! Good luck!

Q&A: Can running and pilates make women´s body bulkier?

Question by BETH: Can running and pilates make women´s body bulkier?
I started running 35 minutes 4 times/week and I´m doing pilates 5 times a day. I have noticed my body is a lot more toned up, and my but is higher, but I actually increased a size!!! I watch very close what I eat and I know I´m not eating more than 1500 calories per day…what should I do to go back to my original size?!!! Can too much exercise make me bulkier?

Best answer:

Answer by Jason V
Usually it doesnt. Could it be a transition stage where your muscles are toning up thus pushing out the body fat thats left over? Try walking instead.
