What type of self defense class is best?

Question by Strik: What type of self defense class is best?
I’d like to learn some sort of self defense, to get me into shape and it’s better to be safe than sorry. Any particular one really good and somewhat fun to learn? What would it be called? (karate ect…)

Thanks!

How long would it take to get comfortable at self defense?

Question by Adam: How long would it take to get comfortable at self defense?
I know this is is a difficult thing to answer. There is a self defense class that i would like to take. Its based on Hapkido i believe but its for street self defense. Now, im a bit of a small guy and im just wondering, with average determination how long can i expect to train before i would feel comfortable defending myself in the “average” situation. Again i know there are A LOT of variables here, but can anyone give me any kind of idea what to expect? I really only have 4 or 5 months to train…

becoming an apt fighter in self defense really has no time reference; it’s entirely situational. you might only learn how to deliver an elbow blow, but if you walk out of the gym that night and get attacked, that elbow could save your life.
in your case, it really depends on a) how long the classes are, b)how much training you are doing outside of class, and c) how much effort you put in. the more time you spend training and studying, the more it becomes second nature to you. and, in a real-life self defense situation, you will sink into an adrenal state, in which case, your muscle memory will have to take over to save your life.
so, in all honesty, the length of time it takes to become comfortable with your abilities really depends on you.
4 to 5 months will be a good amount of time to build a solid foundation to start with.

Q&A: Is it possible to defend oneself well after taking a relatively short self defense course?

Question by Jugador: Is it possible to defend oneself well after taking a relatively short self defense course?
Sometimes there are relatively short self defense courses at a school, or at an university or wherever. In those kind of courses you don’t acquire a good physical capacity of course(if you previously wasn’t in a good shape)
So, can someone defend well after finishing that kind of self defense courses?

Q&A: In terms of learning self defense, is Muay Thai and Kickboxing the same thing?

Question by : In terms of learning self defense, is Muay Thai and Kickboxing the same thing?
I want to learn Kickboxing for self defense and not as a sport, but I’ve read places that Muay Thai (which people recommend as the best self defense) is different from Kickboxing. In terms of self defense, is this true?
The thing is, I checked the site where I’d probably sign up for Kickboxing and it said on the site that it incorporates effective hand, knee, elbow and foot techniques… so what does that mean?

I dont think kickboxing teaches knees and elbows. Also their stances are completely different. Muay Thai’s stance is more weirder. I dont prefer that stance. Also muay thai clinches and does knees and elbows.

How realistically effective is a Kubotan in an actual self defense situation?

Question by AJP: How realistically effective is a Kubotan in an actual self defense situation?
I was looking up self defense items and the Kubotan key chain looked appealing because it looked easy to carry around and wasn’t obviously a weapon.
But in an actual situation if you were being attacked or mugged (say by multiple people even), how effective and easy would it really be to use in the hands of an untrained person without fighting skills?
Also, are there any other types of easily carried that preferably don’t look like weapons?
*easily carried weapons

I can’t speak of its effectiveness, because I’ve never used in a fight. But based on the principle idea of the kubotan, it can be effective, if you don’t feel like killing you’re opponent. It comes with both a blunt, and sharp end. The sharp end, I don’t think could stab or pose a SERIOUS threat. It’ll still hurt, and it can poke out eyes, if you aren’t careful.

But for an actual self defense situation, you need time to pull it out, and use it effectively. There are so many factors in that alone. The reason muggers approach you off guard, is to do just that. Throw you off guard, not give you a chance to think or respond. Never rely on a tool to get you out of a tough spot. Rely on you’re brain.

What is the line between self defense and assault?

Question by ricky h: What is the line between self defense and assault?
What does it take to classify it as self defense?

Can I hit him if he swings first or does he have to make contact?
If he tries to cheap shot me, can I attack him?
If he lays a hand on someone else, can I defend them?
If I’m attacked in the persons house, does it matter?
When do I have to let up?

You don’t have to answer every question…I just want to know if the situation ever comes around so I dont get into any legal trouble.
