Q&A: What style of self-defense would be best for someone with no experience?
Question by djorlcc: What style of self-defense would be best for someone with no experience?
I’m not athletic or very flexible, but I’m hoping to learn some self defense. Is there one that will be able to give me some skill in the art, but will not be too demanding in the beginning? I’ve heard that most forms of self-defense require a minimum level of fitness in the beginning.
Yes, I could carry a weapon, but that’s not always possible in case of a attack. For example, a lot of places don’t allow pepper spray.

in your case, i would just carry some pepper spray or a tazer.

Self-Defense?
Question by Megs: Self-Defense?
What defense can be used when one assaults someone to protect a loved one? I have heard it called self-defense but I’m not sure that’s right.
In this particular case the attacker says he blacked out and cannot remember what happened. When the police arrived he, his pregnant lover, and the victim were the only ones in the house. His lover was unconscious after an alleged attack by the victim, the attacker entered the house, claims he saw the victim standing over his lover and cannot remember anything until the police arrived. Could you use a self-defense plea, or possibly a mental disease or defect plea? What defense would be more substantial and can you quote a case were this plea was used and successful?
Also, the lover cannot remember anything beyond arriving at the house. She does not recall being attacked, although there are injuries. The police found that the victim in this case was the father of the baby and think that is possibly motive for the attacker. The attacker claims he had no knowledge on this fact until after he was arrested.

You can’t use any more force than is absolutely necessary and the person MUST ask for your help.
In this situation you could not present the affirmative defense of self defense. It might help the jury to sympathize with you, but it does not apply in the situation you describe.
Quite frankly, he doesn’t have a lot of hope unless he can prove he himself felt that he was in danger of grievous bodily harm or death. Most states impose a duty to run before fighting back. Obviously, he could have left through the same door he entered.
The 1st victim should press charges.

Q&A: self-defense?
Question by rell: self-defense?
I’ve read a news article saying that a man shot his wife to deaf with a 22 rifle and he clamed that it was all in a act of self defense because his wife was chasing him around the house with a knife. But that man shot his wife over 8 times with the rifle witch only takes six rounds of bullets to reload. Did this man have the right to say that this was all in the act of self-defense?

How is occupying another people’s land “SELF-DEFENSE” while fighting back against this occupation is TERRORISM?
Question by The REAL Aryan H R1a: How is occupying another people’s land “SELF-DEFENSE” while fighting back against this occupation is TERRORISM?
Is there any logic at all in this argument???
@dandyl
“Israel’s right to exist, like that of the United States, Saudi Arabia and 152 other states, is axiomatic and unreserved. Israel’s legitimacy is not suspended in midair awaiting acknowledgment….”
I can agree with that, Israel has a right to exist, but ISRAEL IS AN OCCUPIER IN THE WEST BANK (and technically still in Gaza as they still control most of the utilities there).
I think you are just lying like you always do dandyl.
Remember yesterday when I asked:
“who fires more rocket the Palestinians or the Israelis, and whose rockets killed more people?”
Your verbatim answer was:
“To answer your question Israel has never fired rockets”
as if there a big difference between tiny non-explosive rockets and bunker buster missiles.
When I responded you, embarassed, deleted your answer reported me .
I have the moral ground here as I am not a liar.
Goodbye
Are you going to report me again dandyl??
For simply stating the facts about the lying media.
@ Liberal Azzkicker
I’d like to see how long you would stand it if someone fired bunker buster missiles at your house and killed your entire family. I’d like to see you sit there and do nothing as that is what you want the people oppressed by an occupation to do, you filthy hypocrite.
@ Microbeast
Are you completely departed from reality or are you just metally retarded like every other blind supporter of the War???
there were inspection in Iraq for more than 10 years, and even after that in 2002 the UN did do an inspection. And even after that, the UN did more inspection in 2002 and nothing was found, but even if he didn’t allow them, it wouldn’t matter.
“But we killed Saddam Hussein and Iraq is better”
Yeah and you did the same to almost 600,000 civilians and Iraq today is even sh/ttier than under SH.
“But Iraq is a democracy now”
Are you talking about the same democracy that allows Sharia to be reinstituted and represses women, and is made up of the same religious leaders which Saddam Hussein kept out of office??? The same ones that George W. Bush welcomed into the White house???
Has the world gone completely insane???
@ dandyl
“the five-year Palestinian War that claimed more than 1,000 Israeli lives.”
1,000 ISRAELI LIVES?? REALLY??
WHAT ABOUT THE NEARLY 7,000 PALESTINIAN LIVES THAT WERE LOST TO THE ISREALIS IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD.
Of course it doesn’t matter, as in the words of one Rabbi ” The entirety of the Palestinians are not worth one Jewish fingernail.” Then you people accuse me of being a Nazi?!!?
Well done, dandyl, well done.
Actually it was 9 year war and one that Ariel Sharon started, NOT YASSER ARAFAT. He started it when he marched onto the Dome of the Rock with 300 soldiers armed with lethal and non-lethal weapons. This incited the entire conflict after 7 year of relative calm after the signing of the Oslo Accords.

There is absolutely no logic in your argument, Israel is not occupying any one elses land.Israel has belonged to the Jewish people for over 3000 years. It has never belonged to any one else, not even any Arabs. The Jewish people base their claim to the Land of Israel on at least four premises: 1) the Jewish people settled and developed the land; 2) the international community granted political sovereignty in Palestine to the Jewish people; 3) the territory was captured in defensive wars and 4) God promised the land to the patriarch Abraham.Israel’s international “birth certificate” was validated by the promise of the Bible; uninterrupted Jewish settlement from the time of Joshua onward; the Balfour Declaration of 1917; the League of Nations Mandate, which incorporated the Balfour Declaration; the United Nations partition resolution of 1947; Israel’s admission to the UN in 1949; the recognition of Israel by most other states; and, most of all, the society created by Israel’s people in decades of thriving, dynamic national existence.Nobody does Israel any service by proclaiming its ‘right to exist.’Palestine was never an exclusively Arab country, although Arabic gradually became the language of most the population after the Muslim invasions of the seventh century. No independent Arab or Palestinian state ever existed in Palestine. Palestinian Arab nationalism is largely a post-World War I phenomenon that did not become a significant political movement until after the 1967 Six-Day War and Israel’s capture of the West Bank.
Article 51 of the United Nations Charter reserves to every nation the right to engage in self-defense against armed attacks. The Palestinians has not hidden their objective of destroying Israel. They have conducted a three-year terror war since Israel’s evacuation of Gaza, which followed the five-year Palestinian War that claimed more than 1,000 Israeli lives. No country would show the degree of restraint that Israel exhibited as its cities were rocketed.
Israel’s right to exist, like that of the United States, Saudi Arabia and 152 other states, is axiomatic and unreserved. Israel’s legitimacy is not suspended in midair awaiting acknowledgment….
There is certainly no other state, big or small, young or old, that would consider mere recognition of its ‘right to exist’ a favor, or a negotiable concession.”

Politcally speaking do you think this is justified Self-Defense?
Question by NONAME: Politcally speaking do you think this is justified Self-Defense?
How far does self-defense go? I mean Hamas’s rockets killed like what 5 Israeli’s so in retaliation they bombed Gaza and killed 300 people wounding 500…… Is that really “self-defense” considering the installations they hit were actually policestations that try to keep the
peace?
IS taking 300 lives for less than 5 self defense or is it Slaughter?
Why bomb when children are getting out of school…? WHy not just do a ground invasion so that they could actually know what they were killing? Why do airstrikes that cause civilian casualties 99% of time?
Is it logical or even rational to kill 300 people for less than 5?
Who was there first Palestinians or Isreali’s? Palestinians so common sense indicates that Israel started it…..
So you think it’s Justified? I think you should see a doctor your mind doesn’t seem stable.
hey dum ass, You know what those “security compounds” were?
They were Police stations ofcourse they are gonna be in civilians areas durrrr durrr
hey buddy hamas doesn’t fire missles LOL, rpgs is the most destructive thing they have ….. big difference there
Dennis the most a single rpg could kill is 10, 1000 would be physically impossible.

When is it considered self-defense?
Question by Tang: When is it considered self-defense?
So there’s this kid at school that wants to “beat me up” for no reason. Yes, I’ve talked to them about it, they yelled, I talked normally. Yes, I’ve talked to teachers and counselors about it. But in the situation that it does become a fight, I want this question answered;
“When is it considered self-defense?”
I know that if they punch me, it’s not self-defense to go ahead and punch them right away. But at what point can I start fighting back so I won’t get suspended?
A little background info,
the perfect is about my height, but heavier than me.
I’m about 5’3” and an average weight(a little under 100 pounds).
Please answer, I really want to know.
because I want to fight back, but I don’t want to get suspended(I’m aware that I sound like a total goody-two-shoes.)
Best answer:
Answer by MtotheC
This highly depends.
Most schools have suspension policies stating that, no matter what, if a student is involved in a fight they get suspended no matter what. More have a policy stating that any student offensively striking another gets suspended, meaning if you are in a fight then you get suspended.
If you want to fight back, try to get in good with your principal and counselors, even your teachers. If people in the school know you are a good man, and didn’t want or mean to hurt that and kid (most of all hope not to do it again); you will not get suspended.
Try to get the populous on your side before-hand, otherwise you are going to get suspended.

Girls, is this self-defense too?
Question by Tim: Girls, is this self-defense too?
OK I’m a senior in HS, in the lunch line I pinched this girl’s butt who is in my calculus class. She turned around and slapped me and then kneed me in the balls. I had to GO TO THE NURSE’S it hurt so bad. We were both sent to the principals’ office. Except I got suspended for a WEEK and it’ll be on my HS transcript records..which will not look good for college. The girl got away SCOTT FREE b/c she acted out of “self defense.”
Girls in my last question about this said it WAS self-defense, I got what I deserved, etc.
So if SHE pinched/grabbed my butt and I turned and SLAPPED her and kneed her in her privates…I wouldn’t get suspended, she would?
And would it still be self-defense?
Of course in the same situation but reversed I’m a woman beater even though she sexually assaulted me and I acted in “self defense”.
Tell me girls, explain this reasoning we have in society.

Parkour- The ultimate martial art for self-defense, or not a martial art at all?
Question by Submission Magician™: Parkour- The ultimate martial art for self-defense, or not a martial art at all?
Okay, now for those who aren’t familiar with this new-age Martial Art please read up before answering. The wiki page is very good on this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkour
also watch some videos on youtube; however, remember there is a difference between “Parkour” and “Free-Running” the same way there is a difference between “TMA” and “XMA”.
Anyway I personally see this as the ultimate martial art for self-defense. It’s also a prime example of how “fighting” and “self-defense” truly differ IMHO.
I just find this one interesting because many traditional martial artists who claim they train only for self-defense and not to fight also say that Parkour is not a martial art because it has no fighting… a bit confusing.
Anyway I recently met up with a few Parkour guys in NY and after reading about how it developed and seeing the training I believe it 100% has to be classified as a martial art, and i also believe that no other martial art (outside of projectile weapons) comes close to it’s effectiveness for “Self-Defense” simply because once you master Parkour nobody can touch you.
Anyone have any input on this?
Also I’d like to offer my aplogies for being an over the top dickhead the past few weeks. I’m not as arrogant or intolorent as I may have been coming across. I just suffered a serious knee injury and was unable to train… which was depressing. Today is my first day back in light training.
The Definition of Martial Arts is “Skills related to War”
These very skills were developed by Belle mastering the French Military Obstacle Course…. which is ofcourse training for War. There may be no fighting, but you can’t tell me these skills aren’t useful in a situation where you can’t win the fight.
If you read the Wiki page you’d see that Parkour is not made to be flashy, it’s made to get you from point a to point b as fast and effective as possible by overcoming all obstacles.
Free-Running is the flashy “XMA” version with all the unnecessary flips and stuff.
Self-Defense would be defined as defending yourself from harm, correct? I think that is clearly what this is designed for.
Also you have to realize that there’s different levels of skill. Ofcourse EVERYONE will find jumping from rooftop to rooftop difficult at first regardless of age.
Basics may never leave you, like learning how to scale a wall slightly higher then most people, practicing balance and crawling on thin ledges. Quickly scaling fire escapes most people may have trouble with.
Saying it’s not appealing for that reason is like saying I don’t want to learn Karate because I can’t do a flying 740 kick.
The reason I chose to ask this question is because in a self-defense situation you’re body goes into fight or flight mode. As Martial Artists we’ve always trained for the “Fight” option, but in reality we realize that “flight” is often the better option when we’re out numbered or outarmed.
Now there is a way to develop the “Flight” skills, and while that’s not how we traditionally think of self-defense it certainly is by definition.
Before just saying my definition of “Martial Arts” sucks please provide a better one.
saying I don’t know what I’m talking about because you can’t think of a good way to word your argument isn’t going to get anyone anywhere. it’s just a simple question, add your opinion. if you don’t think it’s a martial art then you’re certainly with the majority on this one, and i can see why.
i did not use wikipedia to get any information. I simply posted that as a link to some info on “Parkour”.
My definition of martial arts comes from the textbook definiteion of the word “Martial” – martial means “Related to war” correct? in this sense the word “art” clearly refers to a set of skills. hence martial arts ca surely be defined as skills related to war. again, if you have a better definition I’d like to hear it.
I like Shihan’s definition; however, I still think an argument can be made that it could fit. just playing devil’s advocate here.
For the record. I only met up with some people that do this once. I am by no means a student of this art, and yes it is an art even if not a martial art. I just see value in martial application of these skills. Hence I popped this question.
Also just FTR again: www.dictionary.com
Martial- 1.inclined or disposed to war; warlike: The ancient Romans were a martial people.
2.of, suitable for, or associated with war or the armed forces: martial music.
3.characteristic of or befitting a warrior: a martial stride.
Art- skilled workmanship, execution, or agency, as distinguished from nature.
studied action; artificiality in behavior.
Shihan- Yes, but you have to agree that the definition you posted second is terrible. It would disclude all non-asian martial arts… which is just silly.
it would also not include any weapons training, whether traditional or modern, and all military training. meaning according to that definition Krav Maga, Kali, Kobudo, Kendo, Kenjutsu, and tons of other martial arts are not actually martial arts
Yes, and I like your first definition, and I don’t think it contradicts the one I gave with the definition of the words “martial” and “art” combined with the appropriate meaning for each.

It’s an athletic activity… but it’s not a martial art. There is nothing “martial” about that… I see nothing about strikes, defense, sparring, any of that.
Saying that’s a martial art is like saying gymnastics is a martial art… it’s a sport or activity that requires great stamina, strength, etc. but it’s not a martial art.
